NITRITE AND N2O IN WASTEWATER

Since March 2023 we started together with a Danish wastewater plant BlueKolding to measure nitrite and nitrate from process tank through a filtered bypass string.
This to get data from the nitrification, to be able to better control the processes and in that way lower the development of Nitrous Oxide N2O (which is x298 worse than CO2).

‘We have a presumption that it is during nitrification that nitrous oxide is developed, due to incomplete nitrification, i.e. after the formation of nitrite’, Ditte Viereck Vestergaard, microbiologist at BlueKolding explains.
‘By measuring nitrite, we will hopefully be able to clarify whether incomplete nitrification is the cause of nitrous oxide production.
This knowledge can be used to make some changes in our management style, which should hopefully result in less nitrous oxide production’.
